Soroke Medals at BC Summer Provincials (And Shows Well Again!)
It was a great weekend of racing for the Delta Sungod Swim Club at BC’s Summer Provincial Swimming Championships at UBC Aquatic Centre. The group traveled to UBC’s campus to race against 600 of the top swimmers in the province. The four day meet was highlighted with new club records, new National level standards and some top 10 finishes.
Fourteen year old Rebecca Soroke had an outstanding meet with a win in the 50 metre butterfly, and new club records in the 13-14 year old Girls 50 Freestyle Long Course, and the 50 butterfly Long Course.
Club records were also broken by Daniel Wang (16) in the Boys’ 15 & Over 50m breaststroke Long Course, and by Max Zha in the 200 fly Long Course.
The girls’ 13-14 200 relay teams broke club records as well. Records were set by Grace Bruneau, Madelyn Paredes Troughton, Rebecca Soroke and Emma Zhang in the 4x50 Medley Relay, as well as the 4x100 Freestyle and 4x50 freestyle relay. Top 10 finishes were achieved by each team.
DSSC’s coaching staff was looking for a strong finish to races at the end of day 4 of the meet. As Canadian Junior Championships (Nationals) are two weeks after provincials and a 6 day meet, it is important to teach swimmers how to manage themselves over the course of a long meet. Delta swimmers were as fast on Day 4 as they were on Day 1; which was great to see.

Rebecca Soroke (14) gold 50 fly, 4th 100 fly, 5th 50 free, 9th 200 fly
Daniel Wang (16) 8th 100 breast, 9th 50 breast
Max Zha (16) 7th 100/200 fly, 8th 800 free
Emma Zhang (11) 7th 50 free/800 free/100 free, 10th 200 IM/400 free
New National level qualifiers from Delta this weekend were:
Grace Bruneau - Western Championship qualifier in the 200 fly
Max Zha - Western Championship qualifier in the 800 free
Max Zha - Canadian Junior Championships qualifier 200 fly
Rebecca Soroke - Canadian Junior Championships qualifier 50 free
It was great to see new National qualifiers this past weekend. It is the next jump in standards for Delta athletes. With 3 more athletes on the cusp of these time standards the next year will be interesting for the team.
