Great Finals Session Efforts for Delta Swimmers In Edmonton

February 8, 2023

Eight athletes from the Delta Sungod Swim Club attended the Edmonton Open Swim Meet hosted by the Edmonton Keyano Swim Club.  For those athletes it was an opportunity to race against a different group of swimmers in a 50 metre pool, learn to manage themselves away from their parents, and rely on a completely different support system.  With almost 300 swimmers in attendance from all over Western Canada, the competition was stiff, and the results were outstanding with DSSC athletes achieving new personal bests, and some new BC Provincial standards.

New Provincial qualifiers this meet for Delta were Madelyn Paredes Troughton in the 50 breaststroke, and Gurshaan Sangha in the 100 breaststroke, 200 breaststroke, 50 breaststroke and the 50 butterfly.

Top 20 finishers this weekend for DSSC were:
Kayah Apanowicz (16) 17th 50 breaststroke, 19th 100 fly, 20th 100 breast
Chloe MerEdith Jensen (17) 10th 200 breaststroke, 20th 200 backstroke
Harleen Rai (14) 18th 1500 free
Gurshaan Sangha (14) 10th 200 breast, 18th 100 breast, 19th 50 breast
Daniel Wang (15) 13th 200 breaststroke, 17th 100 breast, 18th 50 free/50 breast, 20th 100 back
Max Zha (15) 6th 200 fly, 9th 200 free, 12th 200 IM, 13th 100 fly, 14th 800 free, 16th 50 fly

The meet was also an opportunity for swimmers to fine tune their long course swimming (events in a 50m pool as opposed to a 25m pool.)  Although the tactics in the races are quite similar when switching from Short Course to Long Course, the mental processes may differ from one swimmer to another.

DSSC will be hosting its next session of their Learn to Compete Program starting on Friday, March 31st.  Registration for the program is currently open.  For more information on the Delta Sungod Swim Club’s programs visit www.teamsungod.ca or call 604-345-5912.
